The Omni Charlotte Hotel in the heart of uptown Charlotte will be the host hotel for the 2011 AWSM Convention, June 23-25.
Located at the corner of Trade and Tryon streets, the hotel features oversized guest rooms and complimentary high-speed wireless internet. It is connected to the Charlotte Athletic Club; passes are available for a fee.
The Omni is also connected by glass-enclosed and covered walkways to the Overstreet Mall and EpiCentre, both shopping and dining plazas.
The Omni is a short walk from several Charlotte attractions, including Time Warner Cable Arena (home of the Charlotte Bobcats), the Mint Museum of Craft & Design, Discovery Place, the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the Bank of America Stadium (home of the Carolina Panthers).
Optional activities will be available Sunday, including the U.S. National Whitewater Center. The outdoor recreation area offers whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking. Its must-see feature is the world’s largest and most complex recirculating artificial white water river. See for yourself at www.usnwc.org.
Our room rate is $129 (singles/doubles). Transportation to the hotel from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a hub for USAirways, currently runs about $20 each way. Room reservations must be made by June 2, 2011. The availability of rooms and the AWSM rate are not guaranteed after this date.
Convention registration is $225 for members and $275 for non-members. Students and day rates will be available. Registration for both the convention and the hotel will open in January, 2011.
The 2011 convention planning team includes: Jenni Carlson of The Oklahoman, AWSM’s chair of the board; Alisha Hord of The Sporting News, based in Charlotte; and Jena Janovy of ESPN.com and formerly of the Charlotte Observer.
If you have ideas or would like to get involved (Charlotte-area residents or not!), please drop us a line. VP/Convention Alisha Hord of Sporting News is busy assembling a team, and anyone willing to contribute should email her.
We look forward to seeing you in Charlotte!
