AWSM staff report
AWSM continues to expand its student chapter program, welcoming Georgia, Michigan and UCLA as probationary members this fall.
Those three schools join established chapters at Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Missouri, Penn State, Boston University, Arizona State, Maryland and Ohio University for the 2013-14 school year.
“We are thrilled to bring Georgia, Michigan and UCLA on board,” said Gina Mizell, AWSM’s student chapter coordinator. “All three chapters presented a strong vision and plan for their group in their application and have enthusiastic support from their student leaders, faculty advisors and universities. They will be a huge asset to our growing student chapter program, and I know members will greatly benefit from their involvement.”
The Georgia chapter will be led by president Maria Torres and faculty advisor Vicki Michaelis, a former AWSM president. The Michigan chapter will be led by president Amanda Turner and faculty advisor Ketra L. Armstrong. The UCLA chapter will be led by president Jacquie LeMarr and faculty advisors Patrick Wen and Liza David.
Each chapter will be a probationary member for the 2013-14 school year and then will become full members of the program in 2014-15. All student chapter members are required to be national AWSM members. A professional AWSM member will also be assigned to each chapter to serve as its mentor and connection to the national organization.
Oklahoma State and Michigan State became AWSM’s first student chapters during the 2011-12 school year. But the program fully launched as a branch of AWSM last year, with Oklahoma State taking home the inaugural Student Chapter of the Year award at the 2013 convention.
Interested in starting a student chapter at your university? AWSM will also be taking applications for the spring 2014 semester. Information can be found at http://awsmonline.org/student-chapters/ or by contacting Mizell at email@example.com.
