The AWSM board met in San Diego from Jan. 18-20, to discuss organizational needs and develop plans to chart a strong future. Every board position was reviewed, with the intention of making AWSM operate more efficiently. The VP/Outreach position, currently held by Joanne C. Gerstner, has become an increasingly growing area that needs to be addressed. The addition of the student chapters, along with other planning duties, has made the position best split up into two board slots.
With the voting approval of the AWSM membership, the board wants to eliminate the single VP/Outreach position and divide it into two VP-level positions:
— VP/Professional Development: to oversee training webinars, regional gatherings, the mid-career grant program, and other forms of programming for professional-level AWSM members.
— VP/Student Development: to oversee the annual internship/scholarship program, the student chapters, and AWSM’s student mentoring outreach.
The AWSM membership will be asked, via email ballot, to vote upon these proposals, starting Friday, March 1, and with voting closing on Monday, March 4 by 5 p.m. ET. If the proposal passes, AWSM’s bylaws will be amended, the board will be expanded, and we will ask for candidates to run for the VP positions in April. If the proposal is defeated, the AWSM bylaws and the board will remain unchanged.
If there are any questions or comments regarding the proposal, please contact AWSM president Stef Loh (stef (dot) loh (at) awsmonline (dot) org).
