AWSM staff report
AWSM@Oklahoma State has won the inaugural “Student Chapter of the Year” award, as determined by a Board committee.
The chapter was quite busy during the 2012-13 school year, growing its membership, hosting professional and social events, and raising $6,000 to start an annual “AWSM speakers series” on campus. The first speaker was ESPN anchor Linda Cohn.
The chapter will be honored at this summer’s national convention in Phoenix, and it will also receive a plaque for permanent display, a prize package of complimentary memberships and 2013 convention registrations from AWSM.
AWSM@Oklahoma State advisor Mike Sowell celebrated the news of the award with chapter president Kelli Grashel.
“We are so honored and delighted to receive this award! It is an absolute privilege to not only be the first collegiate chapter of AWSM but also the first to receive this prestigious award. It is so great to be recognized for all of our hard work and we will only keep improving throughout the years. We are looking forward to doing even more next year and we have some greats plans in the making! We want to thank our professional advisers, advisers and the national organization because none of this would be possible without your help and we appreciate all the support,” Grashel said.
Gina Mizell and former AWSM president Jenni Carlson are the chapter’s mentors.
“This is an incredible honor, and the credit goes to the outstanding members we have had in AWSM@Oklahoma State, not just this year but from the time we held our first planning meeting in April 2010,” said Sowell, who is a co-advisor with Ray Murray. “I want to especially thank our current president, Kelli Grashel, who has been committed to AWSM from the time she arrived at Oklahoma State as a freshman in fall 2010.
“Kelli has been an amazing leader and a fantastic fundraiser, making all of our activities this year, especially the Linda Cohn visit, a reality.”
The AWSM student chapter award selection committee was impressed by all of the chapters who applied.
“Our student chapter program is becoming a true source of strength and inspiration for AWSM as a whole, thanks to great groups such as Oklahoma State,” said Joanne C. Gerstner, AWSM’s VP/Outreach and the director of the student chapter program. “Kelli, Mike, the members and mentors truly made it to a year to remember at OSU, and we are really proud to congratulate them for their efforts.”
