The Association for Women in Sports Media is pleased to kick off the fifth year of its student chapter program, a growing initiative for the national organization. The nationwide program currently has 12 chapters: Arizona State, Georgia, James Madison, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State and Quinnipiac.
Each year, the top student chapter is honored at AWSM’s national convention.
AWSM’s student chapters are formed to connect female and male students interested in sports media to each other and to the national organization through programming that prepares members for the field and creates a camaraderie that has become a trademark of the national organization.
VP/Student Development Gina Mizell and student chapter coordinator Kelli Grashel oversee the program, while Joanne Gerstner assists with coordinating and serves as a faculty liaison for the chapter advisors. Additionally, an active member of AWSM is assigned to each chapter as its professional mentor.
The fall application deadline to be officially recognized as an AWSM student chapter is Oct. 1, 2015. Application materials and more information can be found at http://awsmonline.org/students/
AWSM student chapters are always looking to invite professional members as speakers, either in person or via Skype. If you are a professional member interested in getting involved with the student chapter program, please contact Mizell at firstname.lastname@example.org.
