This March, AWSM bids goodbye to two members of its leadership team.
In the eight years since she first took the position of secretary, Karen Wall Bush has been a mainstay on the AWSM Board. Effective this spring, Bush is leaving to devote more time to her family.
“Stepping down was not an easy decision, but raising a teenage student-athlete is a very demanding job,” said Bush, whose daughter, Emily, is a high school sophomore. “Like many sports parents, I spend many hours in the car, driving Emily to soccer, basketball and softball games and training sessions, washing uniforms and supervising homework.
“It has its challenges — I recently joined the ranks of the laid-off after a stint as a part-time contractor with a group of Patch sites — but every day brings new opportunities and new experiences.”
Bush will finish her term as secretary on Feb. 28.
The board has appointed Meghan Montemurro of the Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, Ill.) as secretary. Stacie Shain, a part-time faculty member at the Indiana University School of Journalism, has also been appointed treasurer.
Montemurro and Shain will assume their new positions March 1.
Rana Cash (The Sporting News) is also leaving her coordinator position, which focused on student chapters.
Finally, the board welcomes freelance writer Allison Creekmore to its digital team. Creekmore will assist VP/Digital Nicole Vargas with AWSM’s social media efforts and other projects online.
