AWSM will feature a Q&A with one of our student chapter presidents and a chapter spotlight. For October, we are featuring the University of Oklahoma’s student chapter and Penn State student chapter president Anita Nham.
Year Founded: 2014
President: Blakely Durham, McKinney, Texas
Vice President: Lindsey Dzura, Colleyville, Texas
PR Director: Darby Perry, Jacksboro, Texas
Secretary: Sammi Steele, Golden, Colo.
Goal for this year: We intend to continue growing the membership and get more involved in philanthropic endeavors. We also hope to have several attendees at the national convention in Austin.
Upcoming events: AWSM OU will host its first philanthropic event this spring. AWSM OU and the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication will team with Norman Public Schools to present a day-long seminar/workshop where OU’s AWSM members will present lectures and host discussion groups with women in the Norman Public Schools system who are interested in media careers, particularly sports media. The middle school and high school students will be able to watch the production of Gaylord’s live daily newscast, “OU Nightly,” from the control room and studio. The students will also comprise the studio audience for that night’s nationally televised “Sooner Sports Pad” episode. This will provide our AWSM members with a chance to pass on knowledge to the next generation of journalists and for the younger students to witness first-hand all that OU and AWSM have to offer them when they arrive as freshmen in the coming years.
Favorite events last year: Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione spoke to the group at our inaugural semester meeting, and women’s basketball coach Sherri Coale spoke at the fall finale. Both were guests on Sooner Sports Pad, the only all-student broadcast in America that reaches a live national audience. About two-thirds of our members work on the show, and we conduct our meetings after the show wraps on Monday nights. In between, we had visits from Kelley L. Carter from ESPN’s “The Undefeated” and Houston Chronicle columnist Jenny Dial Creech, who is AWSM’s president.
Dream speaker and why: Katie Nolan of Fox Sports’ “Garbage Time.” Last summer chapter president Blakely Durham, joined Katie on stage at the AWSM National Convention in Miami for a Q&A session, and chapter co-advisor Lee Reynolds also met Katie. We want the entire chapter to get the same opportunity to spend some time with a young woman who is making her mark in the world of sports media in exciting and creative ways.
President’s comment: “I am very proud of all that our chapter was able to accomplish in the fall of 2016. We were all grateful for the time spent by faculty advisor Barry Orr in teaching a “Football 101” class to the group so that those who did not grow up learning the ins and outs of the game could catch up with some who did. And we are extremely excited to be hosting the media workshop with students from Norman Public Schools.”
