The Association for Women in Sports Media has named CNN sports editorial director Kathy Kudravi as its chair of the board.
Kudravi, a former AWSM secretary/treasurer, relocated to Atlanta this summer to work for CNN after spending nearly 13 years in Connecticut while employed at ESPN. She began her career at the Myrtle Beach Sun News and also worked at newspapers in Nashville, Cleveland and Fort Worth.
“I am thrilled to have been asked to return to the AWSM leadership group as chair,” Kudravi said. “In my new role advising the board, I look forward to working with new president Stef Loh and longtime board members like Joanne Gerstner, Nicole Vargas and Lydia Craver. I hope my eight years as secretary/treasurer in the late 1990s/early 2000s will provide guidance as we work to keep the organization financially secure. And, as always, I look forward to mentoring our students and younger members.”
Kudravi – who joined AWSM in 1992 – was appointed by AWSM’s board after the membership approved a change to the structure of the chair position in late July. The position is now open, by appointment, to any former officer who served four or more years on the board or is a past president.
CRAVER, GERSTNER AND VARGAS RETURN: Former board members Lydia Craver (VP/conventions), Joanne Gerstner (VP/outreach) and Nicole Vargas (VP/digital) were elected to their respective positions in July.
Craver will oversee AWSM’s 25th anniversary conference next summer in Scottsdale, Ariz. An AWSM member since 2000, she previously served on the board in various capacities – including as VP/conventions. She joined ESPN in 2008 after spending a decade in newspapers – most of it in SouthFlorida, working for The Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post.
Gerstner will supervise the group’s outreach efforts, including the development of college chapters. An AWSM member since 1992, she has held numerous board positions – including president and chair of the board. Gerstner, whose work has appeared in such outlets as the Detroit News, New York Times and espnW, is a Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan.
Vargas, an AWSM member since 2001 who has filled multiple board positions, will oversee the group’s website and social media presence. She is a lecturer/internship coordinator at San Diego State’s School of Journalism & Media Studies and owns a digital media consulting business. Vargas previously was a sports reporter at the San Diego Union-Tribune, from 1999-2010.
NEW COORDINATORS ANNOUNCED: AWSM has added three coordinator positions, which will be filled by Stacy Hicklin Bauman, Rana Cash and Jennifer Overman.
Bauman – a former scholarship/internship coordinator who works for the Tulsa men’s basketball program – will assist with AWSM’s digital efforts. A former Pioneer Award coordinator, Cash is employed by The Sporting News and will serve as outreach coordinator, working with college chapters. ESPN’s Overman – who previously served as VP/administration – will be administration coordinator.
MORE OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE: AWSM will seek a convention coordinator and fundraising coordinator in 2013. If interested, email info (at) awsmonline (dot) org or contact any board member.
