The Association for Women in Sports Media has selected Tampa Bay as the site of its 2019 convention.
“We’re excited about returning to Florida, which is always a popular among our attendees,” AWSM board chair Lydia Craver said. “The wealth of members – both professional and student – as well as media outlets and sports organizations throughout the state provide a strong foundation for our conference.”
The Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina will host AWSM attendees from June 13-16, 2019. AWSM has secured a room rate of $169/night for singles/doubles, which will be honored three days before and after the conference – pending availability. Parking, normally $28/day, will be available at a reduced rate of $16/day.
Some members may be familiar with the property as it is often serves as a host hotel to teams and media groups in Tampa Bay for college football, NFL and NHL events. Amalie Arena, home to the NHL’s Lightning and 2019 Women’s Final Four, is across the street.
The Marriott Waterside is conveniently located nine miles from Tampa International Airport (TPA), which is recognized as one of the nation’s top airports. All major domestic airlines fly into Tampa – including Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, Jet Blue, Silver, Southwest, Spirit and United. The smaller St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) is 22 miles away and primarily served by Allegiant.
AWSM has hosted regional events in Tampa/St. Petersburg but this will be its first convention in the area. The organization’s previous meetings in Florida – Miami (2016, 2008 and 1995) and Orlando (2014) are among the highest attended in group history.
AWSM’s 2018 convention is set for the Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, Ariz. Registration for the June 21-24 event will open in March, 2018.
