Multiple cities are on deck for AWSM’s 2015 slate of regional events, including Charlotte, Denver, Indianapolis, Miami, Phoenix and Washington. AWSM held its first regional event of the year in October, concurrent with the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) convention in Louisville, Ky.
Local sports media professionals gathered at BBC Brew in downtown Louisville for an evening of fellowship, relationship building and discussion of best practices. The event spearheaded AWSM’s series of regional events, which will take place in different cities across the country that will lead up to AWSM’s national convention May 23-25 in Denver.
Stacie Shain, AWSM’s treasurer and an instructor at Bellarmine University, organized the Louisville event. Local event attendees included Whitney Harding, sports/news reporter at WHAS Louisville and Lakin Louiso and Emily Weisenbarger, who are students at Bellarmine. Sports media professionals in town for the NACWAA convention also attended the event, including Sahar Abdur-Rashid and Kristen Jacob Smith from the NCAA national office in Indianapolis, Erin Bean from the Northeastern Conference in New Jersey, Erin Dengler from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Amanda Murphy from University of Illinois at Springfield and Jenna Willhoit from University of Dayton.
Ideas, fun moments and experiences were shared over food and drinks at BBC Brew. The well-attended social and networking event had a common theme throughout the night: empowerment and how distinct qualities and skill sets led us to our selected career paths. Louiso discussed the challenges of a career in sports broadcasting and Smith, who is married with young children, talked about work-life balance and managing media operations for different sports at the NCAA.
