Each Monday in January, we will introduce an AWSM member as part of our “Member Mondays” initiative. Get to know some of your AWSM colleagues!
Name: Tina E. Akouris
Date You Joined AWSM: August 2015
How AWSM has helped you: Networked with a college journalism program where I recently gave a few lectures and hosted a Q and A with journalism students. Mentoring and helping students is what I’ve always wanted to do and I hope to get more opportunities to do this through AWSM.
Where do you work: Chicago Tribune
Previous Job: Sportswriter for 15 years at Chicago Sun-Times; news producer and writer at WBBM Newsradio in Chicago, a CBS radio affiliate.
Resides: Suburban Chicago
Favorite team/s: Any team at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the White Sox
Favorite sporting event/s: NASCAR as a fan and while I was a reporter for the Sun-Times. There was just something about watching this massive amount of equipment and people pull into a racetrack, and then as quickly as they came in they packed up and left. Also, I’ve always been interested in cars and how they work and perform since I was a kid. NASCAR brought out the Gearhead in me.
Bucket list sporting event/s: The Rose Bowl; any Olympics; the Daytona 500 all in a work-related capacity.
Favorite sports venues: Indianapolis Motor Speedway; Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Ill.; Chicagoland Speedway, Joliet; Kohl Center, Madison, Wis.
