We’ve had a busy couple of months at AWSM@Michigan State. We spoke to AWSM member and ESPN reporter Shelley Smith at our Oct. 12 meeting. She was excited to tell us about her journey in journalism and also shared some very important advice.
“There is a reason why you are there as a reporter – figure it out. Find that nugget of information,” Smith said.
She really focused on what it takes to be a woman reporter in sports. We live Tweet from our meetings, at @AWSM_MSU, so our members and followers can also benefit from the advice we have been getting!
At our Oct. 26 meeting, MSU alumna Alyssa Girardi, who is currently working as the Brian Fishman intern for USA Hockey in Colorado Springs, Colo. She really focused on how important it is to maintain connections with everyone you meet.
“I got my last three jobs from someone that I knew. People don’t realize how important connections and mentors are,” Girardi said.
Another unique opportunity we had was participating in the Spartan Sports Journalism Classic on Oct. 23. Our faculty and AWSM advisors Lori Anne Dickerson and Joanne Gerstner spent countless days planning the event. Over 40 alumni that work in the sports industry back to campus. Many of our AWSM members participated in the networking event, including speed-coaching sessions and a social media panel led by former NBA-All Star and NBA TV studio analyst Steve Smith.
Some of our favorite guests included Kelly Thesier Schultz, director of media communications for the LPGA, Courtney Welch, manager of social media and communications for Fox Sports Detroit, and Becky Hudson, senior editor for espnW.
