The Association for Women in Sports Media takes a vested interest in developing the skills and knowledge of our members, while supporting and nurturing their career paths and goals. AWSM is proud to offer mid-career training grants twice a year of up to $1,000 to deserving AWSM members. Recipients are able to stay at the forefront of the ever-changing media landscape, as they further their career ambitions.
Rachel Lenzi (Fall 2014), a sports reporter at The Blade in Toledo, Ohio, was a recent Mid-Career Grant recipient.
Lenzi used her grant to attend the Investigative Reporters and Editors Conference in Philadelphia this past June. The experience taught her the best methods for open-records reporting and requests and allowed her to meet and learn from other investigative reporters who utilize open-records reporting on various beats.
“Participating in panels that ranged from analyzing data to requesting public records and even interviewing liars – which was one of my favorite panels to attend, that included Barry McManus, a former CIA interrogator and vice president of the Patriot Group – I was able not only to interact with reporters but learned valuable tools to take different approaches to reporting,” Lenzi said. “It wasn’t just investigative reporting but tools and fundamentals that can apply to enterprise reporting, projects and even day-to-day aspects of covering a beat, whether it’s requesting public records, analyzing data or working with sources.”
