Miami convention photographer Arianna Grainey has won first and third place for sports photo and photographer of the year for Non-Daily category of the Arizona Newspapers Association’s contest. Her first-place photo is a layered piece of a gymnast on pak salto (asymetric) bars, and her third-place photo is of a spring training game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland Athletics.
Grainey found out about the wins after getting back from the AWSM conference in Miami. Grainey is based in Phoenix and works as a freelance photographer for the Apache Junction, Queen Creek and Mesa newspapers in Arizona.
Dana Sulonen became a co-host of “The Lunch Break with Zac and Dana” radio show on Oct. 3 on ESPN 106.7-FM in Auburn, Ala. Sulonen is in her third year as sports editor for the Opelika-Auburn News. Though Sulonen has been a guest on other radio programs, this is her first time hosting a radio program.
Jourdan Rodrigue will join the Charlotte Observer on October 24 as one of two beat writers who will cover the NFL’s Carolina Panthers. Rodrigue previously covered Penn State football, basketball and wrestling for the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa.
Gerald Ahern is now Editor-In-Chief of Golfweek Magazine. Ahern will work with the new property of USA Today Sports Media Group, in addition to his current responsibilities as the company’s Vice President of Content.
Penn State seniors Erin McCarthy and Morganne Mallon are co-finalists for the Associated Collegiate Press awards thanks to their work with The Daily Collegian’s investigative team. The team, which they founded last year, worked on “Breaking Point”, which chronicles alleged emotional abuse by women’s ice hockey coach Josh Brandwene. McCarthy, a member of AWSM’s Penn State chapter, is also an intern for the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she covers Penn State football.
