As our 25th anniversary convention draws closer, it is an opportunity for us to not only look back at how this group has grown from a small gathering of women, to a force seeking to create opportunities for women and the men who support them in sports media.
And the future has never been brighter.
To map out that future, the Board of Directors met in January on a retreat, spending 48 hours solely on charting a direction.
One of the first things we did was re-evaluate our mission statement — Who are we, and who do we want to be going forward?
With that in mind, this is how we have summarized our mission:
“The Association for Women in Sports Media is a 501(c)(3) international organization whose male and female membership supports the advancement and growth of women — both student and professional — in sports media.”
“International” was added because modern technology has made the world a smaller place. Women in sports media face similar issues regardless of where they work. We have seen increasing interest from female professionals worldwide.
We emphasized “advancement and growth” because although there are more women in the business now than there were 25 years ago, the number of women — especially in management ranks — still pales in comparison to the number of men. There remains tremendous room for growth, and we want to help facilitate that.
We also charted goals for 2013, all of which are geared toward advancing our mission statement.
1. Cultivate stronger bonds with our members.
2. Raise AWSM’s profile. We want to be the organization that comes to mind when anyone thinks about women in sports media.
3. Give members more. Bring back webinars and start video tutorials and live chats with experts. We also want to bring people together, perhaps through gatherings at the Final Four and other big events.
4. Expand student opportunities. With a growing network of student chapters, we’re starting a Chapter of the Year competition. We also have plans to expand the internship program.
5. Add 250 members in 2013.
