The business meeting, held each year at the convention, was led by president Jennifer Overman, VP/professional development Kelly Burke, and incoming president Jenny Dial Creech.
Highlights from the meeting include:
— An overview of AWSM, and introduction of incoming board members present at meeting
— The discussion of thought processes behind timing and location of conventions, and considerations when choosing sites
— Regional event plans for the coming year include focusing on four primary sites, sprinkled with smaller get-togethers in other places.
— CoverItLive events have been successful, but still trying to find the right time to host for best attendance. The audience has been made up primarily of students, but the entire AWSM membership is invited/encouraged to join.
— Funding for mid-career training grants is running low, but we still plan on 1-2 more cycles while we pursue new funding. Applications for the grant have been sporadic; we will encourage members to consider ways this grant can be helpful.
— VP/student development Gina Mizell discussed the state of our student initiatives, reviewing the three new student chapters we added this year and our new coordinators and oversight of those chapters.
— Scholarship applications and internship opportunities are at an all-time high; AWSM seeks more scholarship donors at $1,250 a year. Donors can be individuals, groups or potentially companies.
In summary, the board still seeks a VP/fundraising, as well as volunteers who wishs to help in any area in a non-board position.
If you have any interest in the VP/fundraising position or in helping out in the areas of digital, student chapters as speaker or mentor, regional events, fund-raising, convention or any other area, or have any questions about funding a scholarship, please contact president Jenny Dial Creech or board chair Lydia Craver, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
