Merrill College welcomes high-school and college reporters for an intensive, all-day workshop on the nuts and bolts of sports reporting.
The Shirley Povich Sports Journalism Workshop will be held at the University of Maryland College of Journalism Saturday, April 9, 2011 at Knight Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Under the direction of University of Maryland Professor of the Practice George Solomon and Shirley Povich Professor Kevin Blackistone, leading sports journalists, editors and broadcasters will conduct seminars on topics such as: new media, blogging, game coverage, beat reporting, feature writing, investigative journalism, interviewing techniques, column writing, editing, radio and television production and hints to finding jobs and internships.
Sessions on getting your first job out of school, new media, writing, reporting, editing, television production and a panel discussion on covering today’s athletes are among the highlights. Lynn Povich, the daughter of Shirley Povich and the first woman senior editor of Newsweek and former Editor of Working Woman magazine, will be the luncheon speaker while alumna Bonnie Bernstein of ESPN will moderate two panels and discuss her career in a free-for-all session with attendees from 3 to 4.
