AWSM will feature a Q&A with one of our student chapters each month. For April, we are featuring the University of Georgia’s student chapter.
President: Co-Presidents: Celia Palermo (Ventura, Calif.) and Ashleigh Shay (Wall, N.J.)
(Since we have a smaller chapter, Ashleigh and I oversee the group’s efforts for this year but will pass duties to a full officer board in the fall.)
Goal for this year: Our goal for this year is to re-establish our chapter on campus as an outlet for women (and men!) in sports media to gain valuable skills for their future careers in the industry. We plan to do that through a combination of social events and networking opportunities.
Events: A chapter-wide watch party for Gonzaga vs. UNC in the NCAA Tournament championship game; upcoming speaker series.
Favorite event last year: AWSM@UGA co-hosted Verne Lundquist speaking at UGA through the Grady College of Journalism. While it was a large-scale event, our members enjoyed the opportunity to ask Verne questions as well as hear his story in his own words. We left the event feeling inspired and excited for the future of sports broadcasting and thankful for those who have paved it before us.
Dream speaker and why: Our dream would be to hear from Doris Burke or Holly Rowe. Both have such interesting stories for how they started their careers, and they also are great role models for women pursuing careers in sports.
President’s comment: I’ve learned so much this year working with our members to learn what they hope to get out of their involvement in AWSM and what they’re working on here at UGA. Everyone has such a unique perspective, and we all aim to help each other out at school and in life. Can’t wait to see what our futures hold and to support each other along the way! — Celia Palermo
