AWSM opens its board elections June 15, and Jenny Dial Creech and Rachel Lenzi are running unopposed for AWSM president and VP/digital, respectively. Their terms will begin following the Miami convention. AWSM also is accepting candidates for VP/fundraising.
AWSM members are invited to vote on the candidates for these two board positions, starting now and ending June 20. Terms will begin at the conference July 28-31 in Miami.
CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT, JENNY DIAL CREECH
Jenny Dial Creech has served on the AWSM board since 2013, first as Vice President / Conventions and then as Vice President / Fundraising. Creech is the Assistant Sports Editor at the Houston Chronicle. She also helps cover the NBA – her previous beat – and works on other projects as a writer/reporter.
“AWSM is an organization very near and dear to me,” Creech said. “Since joining, I’ve learned so much, met so many great people and grown as a sports journalist significantly. My hope as president is to help our group grow and thrive and most importantly continue to be a constant support system to our members.
“We have lofty goals as a group – from working with our students, putting on top-notch conventions and educating our membership – and I’m excited for the opportunity to work with my fellow board members to achieve them all.”
Creech, a University of Oklahoma alum, has been at the Chronicle since 2005 and has covered an array of sports including preps, the WNBA, the NFL, the MLB and most recently the NBA. In 2014, she spent two weeks in Istanbul working for the Turkish Basketball Federation. She also teaches journalism students several times a year at Columbia University, and is one of the recipients for APSE’s Diversity Fellowship.
Creech is a San Antonio native, a Tex-Mex connoisseur, a basketball enthusiast and avid mystery reader. She and her husband Daniel and their two dogs Oscar and Lily live in West Houston.
CANDIDATE FOR VICE PRESIDENT / DIGITAL, RACHEL LENZI
Rachel Lenzi has served on the AWSM board for two years, first as Digital Coordinator and as the interim Vice President / Digital since January.
Lenzi is a sports reporter at The Blade in Toledo, Ohio, and covers the Michigan football program, professional hockey and auto racing.
As VP/Digital, Lenzi said she will look to extend the reach of AWSM’s digital communications platforms, including the formation of a digital committee that will update and maintain the website, as well as coordinate the monthly newsletters and email blasts.
“Communication is the essence of what we do in the media – delivering our message to viewers, readers and consumers – and communication is vital within our organization, to spread the word among professionals and students regarding AWSM and its benefits,” Lenzi said.
Lenzi has worked at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado, Maine and Ohio since 1998. She is a graduate of Chatham College for Women, an NHL enthusiast and enjoys running and cycling.
NOTE: The position of Vice President / Fundraising remains open. Any interested candidates should reach out to any current AWSM board member for more information. In general, candidates should be current AWSM members with some previous experience volunteering with AWSM, in any capacity.
