The Association for Women in Sports Media is a 501(c)(3) organization whose female and male members support the advancement and growth of women – both professional and student – in sports media.
AWSM is a volunteer-managed, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1987 as a support network and advocacy group for women who work in sports media (reporting, editing, broadcast, media relations, etc.). Founded by Nancy Cooney, Susan Fornoff, Michele Himmelberg and Kristin Huckshorn – our membership of more than 1,000 women and men primarily includes professionals in sports media and students aspiring to careers in the industry.
AWSM works to promote and increase diversity in sports media through career-enhancement networking and mentoring initiatives as well as the internship/scholarship program – which has placed more than 200 female college students in paid summer positions since 1990. We hold regional events and an annual convention, where we honor individuals who have paved the way for women in the industry with the Mary Garber Pioneer Award.
The Association for Women in Sports Media has the following objectives:
Serve as a positive advocate for women in sports media by offering support, mentoring and networking services as well as national visibility.
Serve as a watchdog, promoting fair portrayal of female professionals in sports media, encouraging diversity, positive workplace environments and equal access to opportunities.
Mentor and assist college women interested in pursuing careers in sports media through internships and scholarships, student chapters and networking events.
AWSM thanks the following individuals for their service on the board during the organization’s first 30 years: 1987-2017.
