I first joined when I was a junior in college and was awarded one of our AWSM scholarships in 2010. I had my internship that summer at Sports Illustrated and quickly became hooked. I think I missed the convention in 2011 because it was my first year out of school, but I’ve been to every single one since 2012 in Chicago. I’ve also been our internship/scholarship coordinator for the past three years.
The most important way AWSM helps me is that feeling of community. All through college when I was really figuring out my career path, I always felt like I was the only female on this journey. Once I found AWSM, I remember feeling shocked to discover a network of women with the same professional interests as me. AWSM is an inclusive group and a great support system of people I reach out to, for advice when I have questions about how to handle certain situations while reporting.
