Around 1992 or 1993. I don’t recall. My first convention was Seattle, I believe. Then Austin, Colorado Springs and Miami.
AWSM provides inspiration. When I was starting out – and even 10 years into my career – women were still scarce in sports departments. AWSM helped me connect with a wonderful group of women with shared interest in and understanding of sports that many of us still don’t find in a random group of female friends. And I’m so proud of the women who I saw join AWSM as interns or fresh-out-of-college journalists who have grown, matured and contributed to AWSM’s development while building outstanding careers.

“Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson (My mom gave me a photo plaque with that quote when I was in about seventh grade. I still treasure it.)
